Ideal Client Clarity: reveal your right-fit coaching client in 30-minutes or less

Are you tired of shouting into the void, only to be met with silence?

If you're wrestling with the echo of your own voice amid the cacophony, suffering from dismal conversion rates, feeling the sting of uncertainty about where your coaching business is headed, or doubting your worth as a coach, it's a clear signal: Your message isn't landing because you haven't honed in on who needs to hear it most.

This article is your beacon through the fog. I’m here to help you carve out a clear path to your ideal coaching client, ensuring your voice rises above the noise and reaches the ears of those eager to listen—and pay—for your guidance. Let's clear the air and connect you with clients who are looking for exactly what you have to offer.

Your coaching message, finally heard

Imagine waking up each day to a business where your message cuts through the noise with precision, reaching the hearts and minds of those who've been searching for someone like you.

With your Ideal Client Profile (ICP) crystalized, your content and your offers resonate deeply, attracting clients who feel as though you're speaking directly to them. Conversion rates climb, and Imposter Syndrome fades away, eclipsed by the confidence that comes from seeing the tangible impact of your work on the clients who were meant to find you.

These are the kind of results that are possible once you've nailed down your Ideal Client Profile (ICP). So settle in, grab a coffee, and let's embark on this journey to the thriving, impactful coaching career you've always envisioned.

Drawing up your dream client

Pinning down your ideal client sounds tough, but it's easier than it looks. The process is straightforward and grounded in your own coaching journey. It's about connecting dots you already have, not drawing new ones.

Here’s the 4-step process we’ll be using to zero in on your ideal coaching client with surprising clarity:

  1. Personify your ideal client
  2. Answer the ICP Canvas questions
  3. Run the ICP Reality-Check
  4. Translate your answers into your client’s POV

Your ideal coaching client personified

I thought I knew my clients well. But until I did this exercise, I didn’t realise how many gaps there were in my understanding. You might surprise yourself as well.

Imagine you’re in a conversation with someone you deeply understand and care about. This could be a past client, a close friend, or even yourself at an earlier stage in your life. By imagining you're talking directly to this specific person in all your messaging, you can more easily ground your message, creating a connection that's both intimate and impactful.

A resistance that comes up for many people is the fear of limiting themselves by narrowing down to a single individual. After all, you have many clients, and there are certainly different types of people. Don’t worry about boxing yourself in. This will not limit the range of ideal clients who are able to hear your message. But it will add depth and clarity to your voice.

The ideal coaching client canvas

With this specific person in mind, write down answers to the following questions as best you can. Just flow with what comes to mind. Don’t overthink it. It’s not perfection we’re aiming for, just a rough sketch. The purpose of the questions is to pique your curiosity and get you looking at your ICP from different points of view.

If you draw a blank on anything, just note it down as a detail for further research.

  • Age and Gender: What stage of life are they navigating?
  • Roles and Associations: What familial, professional and community relationships do they fulfil?
  • Industry and Income: What career path are they pursuing? and how much do they earn?
  • Close Relationships: Who influences their priorities and decisions?
  • Media Consumption: Where do they hang out online? what type of content resonates with them?
  • Buying Behaviour: How do they make purchasing decisions? What factors influence their choices?
  • Desires and Aspirations: What does success and fulfilment mean to them? What do they most dearly want to create in life?
  • Needs and Pain Points: What are the most pressing issues and challenges they’re seeking to resolve?
  • Emotional State: What emotions do they experience on a daily basis?

Again, the goal here isn't to create a complex dossier but to sketch a clear, relatable picture of who you're best positioned to help.

The ICP Reality-Check

Now that you've sketched out your Ideal Client Profile, it's time to make sure they're not just ideal but viable. To confirm you're targeting someone who's genuinely attainable and ready for coaching, check your profile against four key criteria:

  1. Connection: "Does my story and expertise resonate uniquely with their needs?" There should be a natural alignment between what you offer and what your client is earnestly seeking. What makes you the perfect coach for them?
  2. Painful Struggle: "Are they actively seeking solutions to a problem that deeply affects their life?" It’s crucial your client is not only aware of their struggle but is also highly motivated to address it, making them more likely to commit to and value the coaching process.
  3. Reachability: "Do I know where to find them and how to speak their language?" To grow your business, you will need to know best channels to reach new clients with your message on a consistent basis.
  4. Investment: "Are they ready and able to invest in solutions that improve their situation?" Many a coach has gone broke by forgetting that a successful business requires clients who are not just willing but able to invest in their growth.

If you can answer "YES" to each of these questions, you can feel confident that your ideal client profile aligns well with someone who will benefit from and be engaged in the coaching process, ensuring a fruitful relationship for both parties.

Enriching your ICP with a new POV

Now here's a simple trick to turn your ordinary ICP into a living, breathing, vibing persona that will take your messaging up a notch.

Take your answers to the ICP canvas questions, and rewrite them from your client’s point of view. Instead of describing your client from an objective perspective, step into their shoes and describe their world through their eyes.

By doing this, you are gaining a backstage pass into your client's mental theatre, immersing yourself in their thoughts, feelings, challenges and aspirations. This takes some work, but it's worth the insight and understanding that will offer your coaching a fresh, empathetic resonance.

This simple shift in perspective makes your ICP come to life, activating empathy and insight that will bring a new resonance to your voice and to your message.

ICP Inspiration—Sarah

Here’s an example of what your Ideal Customer Profile might look like based on Sarah, one of our customer avatars at Satori.

  • Age and Gender: I'm Sarah, a 35-year-old certified life coach, living in San Diego. I left my corporate job two years ago to pursue my passion for helping others reach their potential and live their best lives. I'm ambitious and proactive, constantly seeking ways to improve my coaching skills and grow my business.
  • Roles and Groups: I see myself as a business strategist, coach, mother, and partner. I am an active member of the coaching community and I also have a strong role in my family life. Balancing these roles isn't easy, it requires time, effort, and a whole lot of coffee!
  • Industry and Income: After a successful but unfulfilling career in the corporate world, being called to be a coach feels like coming home to my authentic self. As an coach and business owner I am continuously pushing boundaries, helping others, and learning. I’m currently earning about $60K / year from my coaching, and my goal is to triple that in the next year.
  • Close Relationships: My family is my rock. They influence my priorities and decisions in a big way. I also value the relationships I've built with my clients, who trust me and continuously push me to grow.
  • Media Consumption: I'm part of several online coaching communities and I love attending networking events and conferences. I follow influential coaches on LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook, and I often participate in online discussions related to coaching and personal development.
  • Buying Behaviour: When it comes to investing in my business, I'm careful but willing. I believe in investing in tools and resources that can help me manage these challenges and grow my practice in a sustainable way.
  • Desires and Aspirations: My deepest desire is to create a positive impact in the lives of others. In terms of what success looks like to me, it's being able to establish a thriving, 6-figure coaching business that aligns with my values. I'm looking for a platform that understands my challenges and can help me professionalize my business, giving me more time to focus on what I love—coaching.
  • Hardest Challenges: Despite having achieved some initial success, consistency in doing the work required for growth has been challenging. With so many moving pieces, finding the bandwidth to manage everything effectively is a struggle. The technical aspects of running my business can also feel overwhelming. It's not just about coaching for me anymore—I need to professionalize my business, and that includes managing my client base, marketing my services, and even dealing with the finances.
  • Emotional State: My emotional state can vary. There are days filled with joy and fulfilment, and others with anxiety and self-doubt. But each emotion is a part of my journey and helps me connect more authentically with the people I serve.
